How do I know if a Pilates teacher is qualified?

Check your teacher’s credentials…
A growing concern in the field today is the increasing number of under qualified people offering Pilates instruction.

The knowledge and skill of the process originally created by Joseph and Clara Pilates has been watered down - or even lost - as Pilates has become an increasingly popular but unregulated fitness activity.  Teaching Pilates for whole body fitness and therapeutic concerns requires years of specialized training, including a proven understanding of how the body works“. - Kevin Bowen, President of the Pilates Method Alliance

Be sure the teacher you choose has completed a comprehensive Pilates teacher training program, which should include lectures and apprenticeship on the mat and equipment.  We encourage you to read the PMA’s advice regarding “Finding a Teacher” on their website - www.pilatesmethodalliance.org

Can I learn Pilates from a DVD or Video?

We strongly advise that you do not rely on vidoes or DVDs to learn Pilates. Like any other physical discipline, it is not possible for a video to provide the personal observation and feedback that is so essential to mastering physical skills.  Your Pilates teacher acts as a guide, first to introduce the exercises, and then to observe and provide information according to your performance of each skill.  Failure to have feedback can lead to ineffective training, and put you at risk of injury.
